Drug, Set and Setting
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (May, 1984)
Author: Norman E. Zinberg
Average review score:

A classic, sadly neglected and out of print
It is a terrible shame that this classic book is out of print. It is one of the most insightful, and sensible, books written about drug use and addiction. The author tackles what is probably still the most taboo subject in drug research (controlled heroin use) with dignity and responsibility. Every 'expert' in the field of drug research should have read this book.

Dumbth and 81 Ways to Make Americans Smarter
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (October, 1989)
Authors: Steve Allen and Norman Cousins
Average review score:

Dumbth should be required reading for every adult.
"Dumbth" by Steve Allen is a frank look at the deteriation of efficiency and intelligence in our society and what can be done about it. This is one of the most important books I have ever read.

The book assisted me in recognizing those areas in myself that require improvement and gave me concrete ways to work on it.

I encourage people to read this book.

Fast Rolling Dump Truck
This is my nine month old sons FAVORITE book. We've read it every night for a few months now. It's always the first book he pulls out of his basket. He loves turning the pages and looking at the brightly colored drawings! Plus he's able to play with it like a toy.

Dunkirk: The Complete Story of the First Step in the Defeat of Hitler
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (September, 1989)
Author: Norman Gelb
Average review score:

Superb Coverage of The Events At Dunkirk in 1940!
This is a book that entertainingly presents the events surrounding the stunning German victory and the surprisingly facile defeat of the French army in a few short weeks in late Spring 1940, and the equally spectacular evacuation of the remnants of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) from the shores of Dunkirk in a desperate and decisive effort to save what was left of the British forces to fight another day. This book by Norman Gelb provides a comprehensive overview of those horrific events, and also illustrates the manifest effect the battle on the long sandy beaches was having on the balance of world transfixed by these monumental events.

After all, the Wehrmacht had by this point nearly completed its masterful conquest of the French, Belgian, and British forces, outflanking, outfighting, and out-maneuvering their opponents to the point of exhaustion and capitulation. In less than three full weeks, the Nazis had accomplished what appeared to be the most extraordinary military campaign of in modern history, and had overrun most of France, Holland, Luxembourg, and Belgium. The coup de grace would have seemed to have been the ultimate destruction of what remained of the formidable BEF on the beaches of Dunkirk and in its surrounding surf, where the disorganized and demoralized Brits waded toward the most outrageously pitiful armada of small boats and other vessels ever assembled. Meanwhile, the Nazis chose to dither, to engage themselves otherwise, and to ultimately squander their chance to make an eventual victory over England much more probable.

Yet the true contribution of the book is not simply to be found in its wonderfully readable description of the evacuation of the BEF at Dunkirk and the reasons the Germans let it happen. Instead, it is his skillful ability to place these events in the context of a wildly overconfident Nazi hierarchy who appears to have been so over-impressed by their easy victory that they made the same kind of careless assumption about the British fighting spirit and their own invincibility that they made about the Russians the next summer. In essence, they forgot the lessons of history, and, believing their own press releases, were content to watch the desperate comedy of the BEF evacuation as if it made no difference. This was, of course, a very costly mistake, for which they paid quite dearly later.

This is a wonderful book, one that shows the strategic import of the Dunkirk rescue along a startling variety of avenues. Therefore, while in essence this is the detailed description of one of the most celebrated escapes in history, it is also the story of how this particular defeat and the moment of uncertainty facing the Wehrmacht found them lacking in imagination and proper regard for their enemies. By underestimating the ability of the British to regroup and rearm, by misunderstanding just how willful and indefatigable they would become, the Nazis, at the moment of their greatest victory, began sowing the seeds of their eventual defeat. This is a terrific book, and one I can heartily recommend to anyone interested in the history of World War Two. Enjoy!

El poder del pensamiento tenaz

Author: Norman Vincent Peale

Get the knowledge of God, honor His principles and ¡LIVE!
I was a painful load for myself, not to mention my family. Though they had been so kind to me, it was only for my being the support to them. I read this book (The Power of Positive Thinking), and I thank God for having bestowed in Dr. Peale so many blessings upon humanity. I quit drinking. I began to apply all the methods sugested in the book, specially that of reading from the Scripture before going to bed. I did this specially dedicated to my litle ones. The results were amazing; a lot of beautifull things have happened since then. There is no room here to tell you. I love God. I love Jesuschrist; I love His church and I love The Holy Spirit. May God permit all His creatures that longe for true life and happiness show His countenance to them. May my humble testimony serve others to feel encouraged to "Try and see that The Lord is good."

¡God bless you all out there!

Excelent book
This book explains the basics of circuit theory with a lot of solid underestandable fundaments, I think is one of the best recent books on the subject. It is also the key for realy underestanding more advanced topics like analog filter design and sinthesis. If you are going to consult books of european authors, you must first read this book. It is a shame it is out of print.

Elements of Yacht Design
Published in Paperback by Sheridan House (October, 2001)
Authors: Norman L. Skene and Maynard Bray
Average review score:

Non-current edition
Word of warning, although this book is probably excellent as well in the elements of yacht design, the most current edition is the 8th edition, not the reprinted 6th edition. Please note that the 8th edition contains more modern construction methods and materials. Unfortunately the 8th edition is out of print so it is kind of difficult to find. (Published in 1973 and later) Good luck and good designing.

Elie Wiesel: A Voice for Humanity
Published in Hardcover by Jewish Publication Society (June, 1996)
Author: Ellen Norman Stern
Average review score:

This book is very well written; disturbing, but well done
As I wrote the index for this book, I'd find that I was wrapped up in the story so much that I was crying; I'd have to go back to re-read sections so I could index it. It's very disturbing, but very well written. I highly recommend it for all people, so we'll learn not to repeat these atrocities.

Elton
Published in Hardcover by Hutchinson Radius (January, 1991)
Author: Philip Norman
Average review score:

Great biography, hopefully to be updated someday.
Unfortunately, this book ends during the '92/93 time frame. That's too bad, because this is one the finest rock biographies ever written--illuminating, meticulously written, insightful and sympathetic. This isn't one of those Kitty Kelley hackjobs, but a responsible, extremely readable portrait of one of the major composers of the post-war era. Highly recommended.
